We note with great sadness the death of Rosemary Lowe-McConnell. Ro was a pioneer tropical fish biologist who made major contributions to our understanding of African and South American fish ecology. After marrying Richard McConnell in 1953 she was forced to leave her position at the East African Fisheries Research Organisation, which did not allow married women to hold permanent posts. Undaunted, Ro continued her research. Among her many scientific contributions was her 1987 book ‘Fish Communities in Tropical Fresh Waters’. She was an inspiration and we will miss her.

Ro acted as external examiner to Dr Dawn Phillip in 1998. Dawn now holds a faculty position at the the University of the West Indies in Trinidad & Tobago. The picture below shows Anne, Dawn, Jeff and Ro celebrating Dawn’s success.
