Biodiversity Literacy
At the University of St Andrews, the biodiversity literacy program focuses on connecting St Andrews students with local nature. The program comprises of the VIP (Vertically Integrated Project) Biodiversity Literacy module and summer biodiversity internships in St Andrews. Here students can help monitor and improve the biodiversity of the University, learning valuable skills, earning credits, but most importantly, starting a lifelong passion for the animals and plants around them that translates into positive biodiversity decisions. As well as monitoring University biodiversity, the students also help create the wider engagement so everyone working and studying at St Andrews has awareness of the biodiversity around them, again leading to more biodiversity positive actions here and elsewhere. In short – biodiversity only becomes important to people, if they know about it and can interact with it as part of their local place and their daily lives – the Biodiversity Literacy program is all about creating that knowledge and interaction here at St Andrews.
